Weight is closely related to health. In particular, abdominal obesity is the cause of various chronic diseases. However, weight is not an absolute criterion for health. There is a lot of misinformation about weight. Based on data from the US health and medical media ‘Prevention’, we looked at weight-related errors and truths.
◇Weight is an absolute measure of health?
People who are overweight are evaluated as having poor health from a metabolic point of view, such as blood pressure, cholesterol, triglycerides, blood sugar, and heart and arterial health. However, according to a meta-analysis of 24 studies conducted by a joint research team at the University of California, Los Angeles and the University of Minnesota, there was not always a significant association between weight loss and health improvement.
Half of those classified as overweight and more than a quarter of those classified as obese were normal from a cardiovascular perspective. On the other hand, 30% of those classified as normal weight had cardiac metabolic markers outside the healthy range. This means that there is a limit to judging health by weight alone.
Is it better to be underweight than overweight?
If there is an absolute correlation between weight loss and health, health indicators will improve as weight decreases. However, if you go beyond the normal weight and enter the underweight range, there is an association with increased mortality. This correlation was confirmed in a study of people with a body mass index ( BMI ) less than 23 and no special disease.
U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC)), those who are overweight with a BMI of 23.7 to 25.9 have a lower 스포츠토토risk of hospitalization, treatment, and death when contracting COVID-19 , while the risk of complications increases when they are underweight with a BMI of 18.5 or less.
◇ Are the numbers on the scale more important than healthy habits?
If you focus only on maintaining a normal weight, you may neglect other health behaviors necessary to maintain your health. Even if the weight stays in the normal range, if there is a nutritional imbalance, lack of physical activity, or habits such as smoking and excessive drinking, health indicators deteriorate.
The same is true when you are very stressed, depressed or anxious. Studies have shown that engaging in healthy behaviors is more closely associated with longevity than the number on a scale.
Rather than focusing on weight or BMI , it is more important to eat healthy, exercise, manage stress, and try to live a healthier life. Through this, you can naturally control your body fat percentage.
Even if your body weight is normal, if you fall under skinny obesity or maintain a wrong lifestyle, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease can occur.
◇Weight is determined only by calorie intake and consumption?
You gain weight when you eat more calories and lose weight when you burn more calories. However, medications currently taken, underlying diseases, genetic factors, amount of sleep, and even the region and income where one lives are classified as variables that affect weight. According to a research team at Boston University Medical School in the United States, chemicals used in rice fields, additives in processed foods, and substances in tableware can also affect weight.
