Daegu FC had to play two consecutive games away from home against Gwangju and Daejeon, the two surprise promotions in the 2023 season.
The shock of the loss to Ulsan on Children’s Day was somewhat offset by a draw against Pohang, but the pressure of facing Gwangju, who had lost their first match of the season, was daunting.
◀Coach Choi Won-kwon in a pre-match interview (13 May)▶
“I don’t think it’s easy for any team, because they’re playing good football and they have a lot of players with good attacking power… But we’re going to adapt to that and have the best organisation we can.”
Despite being without several key players, Daegu won the match thanks to a goal from 19-year-old rookie Park Se-jin and a brace from Go Jae-hyun. Sixth-placed Daegu were no slouches in their Round 14 clash with fifth-placed Daejeon Hana Citizen.
Go Jae-hyun, the team’s top scorer, scored a goal for the second consecutive game to give the fans who travelled to the match a victory.
◀Go Jae-hyun post-match interview (20 May)
“The only thing we can do for them is to go one step further because they reward us with results on the field, and there are always so many fans who come and make it like our home stadium, so I’m really grateful and I really love the Daegu fans.”
With Go’s goalscoring form alive and well, ranking seventh in the league with five goals, and Sejingya back from injury and playing since the last match against Daejeon, Daegu FC’s next target is a home match against Incheon on Saturday.
With a three-game winning streak on the horizon, something that has never happened in the regular season prior to the 2022 split round, expectations are high.
With a packed schedule ahead of them in early June, all eyes will be on Daegu to see if they can end May with a home win and a three-game winning streak.
