On the 31st, the Seoul Southern District Court sentenced A (20), who was charged with agenda rape of a minor, to one year and eight months in prison and ordered him to register his identity and complete a 40-hour sexual violence treatment program.

In December 2021, Mr. A allegedly had sexual intercourse with a 12-year-old elementary school student he met through social media three times in a month and gave birth to a child.

Since the incident, the victim and her family have been receiving treatment for mental trauma, and the child has reportedly been placed in an adoption agency.

The court noted that “the offense is of poor quality in that it involves sodomy of a victim as young as 12 years old, at a time when she should be forming a healthy sexual identity and values,” and that “the victim was forced to undergo an unwanted pregnancy and childbirth.”

However, “the defendant was also 18 years old at the time of the offense, and the court took into account the defendant’s cooperation with the investigation, his full admission of the offense, and his remorse,” the court said.

In response to the verdict, the victim said, “I did not receive a single apology letter from Mr. A. Does apologizing to the court show an attitude of remorse?” and Mr. A reportedly submitted an appeal to the court immediately after the sentencing.
